Concert in the National Museum – Choir in times of plague

“The choir in times of plague” – an extraordinary concert in the National Museum in Poznań!
The viral threat interrupted the work of most of the artists overnight – the choral ensembles were particularly severely affected. Looking for a new formula for singing together, the Poznań conductor and composer Jacek Sykulski created an extraordinary project
“Choir in times of plague”, co-created by voices known from all areas of music – from opera to popular music.
On his initiative, outstanding soloists, conductors and singers of various Poznań ensembles connected with broadly defined choral music met within the hospitable walls of the National Museum in Poznań to share an interesting artistic programme, including works by great masters, from Bach to Queen.
The concert’s stylistically rich repertoire includes works by composers especially by the originator of the favourite project; therefore, there is room for timeless music by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Górecki, or connected with Poznań Nowowiejski, but not only. This one-of-a-kind ensemble has not limited itself to presenting the hits of choral classics; its unquestionable advantage is the ability to transform the sound in such a way that it allows to face the hits of music which, in terms of genre, seems extremely distant for a traditionally understood choir. We are talking here about popular music hits, and in particular “The Show Must Go On”, in which the ensemble finds a sort of new identity, able to move around in these completely alien areas of the choir with equal freedom.
The uniqueness of the artistic project “Choir in times of pestilence” lies primarily in the enthusiasm and professionalism of its participants, as well as in the great need to return to joint music-making and interaction with the audience.
The experience of meeting such a great number of enthusiasts of this most wonderful of all instruments – the human voice – opens the audience to extraordinary experiences which, paradoxically, they might not have had before March 2020; it seems that such a meeting would then be unlikely.
Today, the impossible becomes feasible, music and singing give hope for a better tomorrow, for the normality that the ‘Choir in times of plague’ so wonderfully anticipates.
