The Poznań Boys’ Choir was established on 1 September 2003 as a new, self-governing cultural institution. The new entity was established on the initiative of the President of the City of Poznan in order to preserve the continuity of the ensemble’s tradition, the origins of which date back to 1945.
The founder of the choir was Jerzy Kurczewski (1924 – 1995), conductor and pedagogue, an authority in the field of choral music, creator of the only choir school in Poland, which had existed since 1957. His Poznań Boys’ Choir gave concerts over 2200 times in many countries on 4 continents. It has taken part in numerous prestigious music festivals, performed at Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Musikverein, among others. The ensemble has recorded a number of albums and has given world premieres of significant works by contemporary composers.
Since 2003, the director of the new Poznań Boys’ Choir has been Jacek Sykulski – composer and conductor.
In recent years the Poznań Boys’ Choir has represented Polish culture in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Italy, Turkey, Bolivia, Japan, the United States, China and Taiwan. It has taken part in prestigious music festivals, performing at venues including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Musikverein, Konzerthaus Berlin, Berliner Dom, Notre Dame in Paris, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Rudolfinum in Prague, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Changsha Meixihu International Culture Art Centre (China) and Matsumoto Harmony Hall in Japan.
The institution is the organiser of important cultural events in Poznań, including the Poznań Caroling – Christmas Music Festival held at the turn of each year, as well as many artistic undertakings promoting choral music in its broadest sense.
In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Honorary Pearl of Culture award for its artistic achievements, and in 2014 and 2021 it received awards from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Thanks to its widely developed national and international activities, it is a musical cultural landmark of the city of Poznań.
The goal of the institution’s work is to create conditions for children and adult choristers that allow them not only to achieve the highest artistic level, but also to derive true joy from singing and to share it sincerely with the audience. Therefore, we place great emphasis on educational work with children and on their individual development.
